India Secures 6 Million Barrels of Iranian Crude as Strait of Hormuz Tension Escalates and US Waiver Expires

India successfully secures 6 million barrels of Iranian crude oil as the supertanker Dorena arrives off the southern coast just before the expiration of a US sanctions waiver on April 19, 2026. Following a brief opening, Iran has reinstated its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, maintaining strict military control amid the escalating West Asia conflict and US port blockades.

n a high-stakes race against shifting geopolitical tides, India has successfully secured approximately 6 million barrels of Iranian crude oil this week, punctuated by the arrival of the supertanker Dorena off the nation’s southern coast on Saturday, April 18, 2026. The Consulate General of Iran in Hyderabad confirmed the arrival via a social media post on the platform X, citing reporting from the Fars News Agency. The Dorena, an Iranian Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), transited the Strait of Hormuz during a narrow window just before the vital trade choke point was re-blocked by Iranian forces. This strategic delivery occurs as the Strait returned to its previous status following a brief opening of less than 24 hours, during which control was temporarily eased before being reinstated under the strict management and control of the Iranian armed forces.

The logistical operation was tracked closely by TankerTrackers, which reported that the Dorena was last seen in Iran just hours before sanctions were imposed. The vessel subsequently appeared on the AIS tracking system off the Indian coast, prepared to deliver its cargo of approximately two million barrels of crude oil to a local refinery on the final day of a temporary US sanctions waiver. This arrival marks the third such supertanker to reach Indian territory within a single week. The Dorena joins the MT Jaya, which reached Paradip Port in Odisha earlier this week carrying 2 million barrels for the Indian Oil Corporation, and the MT Felicity, which anchored off Sikka Port in Gujarat with 2 million barrels destined for refiners such as Reliance Industries. Together, these shipments complete a 6-million-barrel influx of Iranian energy resources.

The timing of these deliveries is critical, as the temporary US sanctions waiver, which specifically permitted the movement of oil already stranded at sea, is set to expire on April 19, 2026. This administrative deadline coincides with a precarious escalation in the West Asia conflict. While the Strait of Hormuz saw a fleeting period of passage, the Iranian military declared onSaturday that control of the waterway has returned to its previous state of military management. This move serves as a direct response to the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports, with Tehran maintaining its restrictive stance as long as the American blockade continues. The successful docking of the Dorena, MT Jaya, and MT Felicity represents a significant achievement in navigating an increasingly volatile maritime and diplomatic landsc
